Astrocytoma Treatment Information
An astrocytoma is a brain tumor that affects a type of glial cell known as an astrocyte. The astrocytes provide various supportive functions in the central nervous system, including repair processes, the provision of nutrients and the regulation of electrical impulses in the brain. As an astrocytoma grows, it may cause symptoms such as headaches, seizures, memory loss, nausea, blurred vision or behavioral changes. It is generally when symptoms appear that an astrocytoma is first diagnosed.
At Moffitt Cancer Center, the multispecialty team that makes up our Neuro-Oncology Program has a high level of experience in diagnosing and treating astrocytomas. Our experts include neurosurgeons, medical oncologists, neuropathologists, neuroradiologists, radiation oncologists and neuropsychologists who collaborate to ensure our patients receive the best possible treatment and care. At Moffitt, we recognize that no two cases are the same, which is why each patient receives a treatment plan that is tailored to his or her unique needs. This individualized approach helps improve our patients’ likelihood of achieving a positive outcome and an improved quality of life.
